CLIMB EVERY MOUNTAIN (Jordan Smith)

“Climb every mountain

Search high and low

Follow every byway

Every path you know

Climb every mountain

Ford every stream

Follow every rainbow

“Till you find your dream

A dream that will need

All the love you can give

Every day of your life

For as long as you live

Climb every mountain

Ford every stream

Follow every rainbow

‘Till you find your dream”

What are you waiting for? A bus? Why are you sitting around day-dreaming, waiting for lightening to strike, and in the meantime, feeling so filled with self-pity? We can always blame others; our parents, our teachers, our ethnic or religious background. Blame is a wide net, but in casting blame, we exonerate ourselves from the responsibility of jumping into life. Sometimes, we are so afraid to make a mistake, that we refuse to make a decision; we might make the wrong one!  Many years ago, I grew up in a family where life was lived and enjoyed and we learned not to let fear become our master; “Shit or get off the pot!” was a favorite phrase that I heard and learned – “quit farting around!”

Jump in, and if it is a wrong decision, then back up and start over. Life as we can see always, is filled with bad decisions and negative consequences, but the other option is to not make any decisions. We humans are called to jump into life, climb the mountains and ford the streams – to accept demands that life puts on us so that we can learn and grow. We all too often bury our dreams; ‘what would others think?’ When we bury our dreams because of fear or our desire for the approval of others, we stifle our spirit and die inside. We quit easily because of the possible actions that would be demanded of us to reach up and touch the stars.

But even more, when we fail to make the effort, we miss out on so much beauty. Mountains are filled with  plant and animal life, spreading out and filling the world with magnificent color and light. To watch a cloud set over a mountain stream, filled with trout, frogs, eagles, hawks, full of life, always becoming, is to miss out on the gifts of wonder and awe. We fail to see the beauty in the water-falls, streams and changes that take place as we climb and as we descend into the valleys. To climb to the tops of the mountains and to look at the night sky, filled with billions of galaxies, stars and planets; to see our own moon and really look at it, fills our soul with gladness and gratitude. We begin to come truly alive. Mountains and streams and rivers and valleys speak to us about our common journey that began over 14 Billion years ago and continues to transform our world through our own eyes. Life is filled with moments of transformation; of mountains that seem much to steep to climb or streams that seem to be too deep to ford. But real life requires that we make the effort. We may not make it, but it is better to have tried and failed, than to fail to try.
