“Come gather ’round people

Wherever you roam

And admit that the waters

Around you have grown

And accept it that soon

You’ll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you

is worth savin’

Then you better start swimming

Or you’ll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin.’

Come writers and critics

Who prophesize with your pen

And keep your eyes wide

The chance won’t come again

And don’t speak too soon

For the wheel’s still in spin

And there’s no telling’ who

That it’s namin’

For the loser now

will be later to win

For the times they are a-changin.’

Come Senators, congessmen

Please heed the call

Don’t stand in the doorway

Don’t block up the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be he who stalled

There’s a battle outside

And it is ragin.’

It’ll soon shake your windows

and rattle your walls

For the times they are a’changin’

Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don’t criticize

What you don’t understand

Your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is

Rapidly agin’

Please get out of the new one

If you can’t lend a hand

For the times they are a-changin.’

The Line it is drawn

The curse it is cast

The slow one now

Will later be fast

As the present now

Will later be past

The order is

Rapidly fadin’

And the first one now

Will later be last

For the times are a-changin.’

These words have been accurate for BILLIONS OF YEARS – and throughout the Cosmos. We, at times, tend to look at creation as static – unchanging. We read the Bible and our History Books as if they contained the total knowledge of reality. In fact, both the Bible and our History Books look at a world in transition since the beginning of time. Families change over the generations, as do Nations and tribes. Change is the only constant. Without change, there would be no Cosmos, no Galaxies, no Stars or Planets; there would be no life – there would be nothing. Life demands change; it demands struggle with death and transformation. Life requires a vision, persistence, and adaptability. All of the great kingdoms and empires of the past have given away and so have those who presumed that they and only they possessed all knowledge and wisdom. We, at times, seem so damn sure of our selves and our opinions, that we lack the humility to admit to any doubt at all. Full Speed ahead – I know where we are going!, forgetting the law of unforeseen consequences. Presumption is the bane of power – we presume that we know all of the facts – “we will be out of Iraq in just a few short weeks and they will welcome us with open arms!”

Bob Dylan was writing and singing his music in the ’60’s when we as a culture were experiencing radical change with regard to racial segregation and our involvement in Viet Nam. While we have in fact made some progress with regard to Racism, we still have a very long way to go. Today, we also striving to break down barriers to equal opportunity with regard to race, and also with sexual discrimination. As we begin to destroy some barriers, new ones arise. And as always, when barriers are broached, there is push-back. Globalization  has been ongoing for hundreds of thousands of years. We are in the midst of the constant development of communication and birth of Artificial Intelligence. The Population growth of our world continually demands adjustment and change in human interaction and survival. Climate Change is a direct result of population change and the increasing demands for energy with the ongoing pollution of our water, land and air. Change is required – not an option.

Generation after generation continues to push forward, while meeting stiff resistance – and quite frankly, it seems that both are necessary. Struggle, pain, loss, and the crucifixion all lead to the Resurrection; to new life. Winter gives way grudgingly to Spring – which gives way grudgingly to Summer, etc. But that is the way of Creation/Transformation and we are all part of that. Existence carries within itself the drive to move forward. It is difficult to let go; to admit to getting older while the next generation pushes; to let go of our youth, our comfort levels, and our assumptions about life. Only then can we actually admit that we are human and are not in charge. But we all have our place and the Spirit of Life breathes through all of creation, calling us forward.
