THE TIMES THEY ARE A-CHANGIN – (BOB DYLAN)

Come gather ’round people

wherever you roam

And admit that the waters

Around you have grown

And account for it soon

You’ll be drenched to the bone

If your time to you

is worth savin’

 Then you better start swimmin’

Or you’ll sink like a stone

For the times they are a-changin’

Come senators, congressmen

Please heed the call

Don’t stand in the doorway

Don’t block the hall

For he that gets hurt

Will be who stalled

There’s a battle outside

And it is a’ragin’

It’ll soon shake your windows

And rattle your walls

For the times they are a-changin’

Come mothers and fathers

Throughout the land

And don’t criticize

your sons and your daughters

Are beyond your command

Your old road is

Rapidly agin’

Please get out of the new one

If you can’t lend a hand

For the times they are a-changin’.”

Change is difficult – life is difficult – it is a process of change; of letting go of the old to make way for the new. For well over 13 Billion years, the Cosmos has been in a process of growth and change. Galaxies, stars and planets have come and gone – the entire Universe keeps expanding and changing and we are part of that. Life has existed on our planet earth for more than 3 Billion years and continues to expand, change and grow; and we are part of that. We work to understand what it means to grow and change – hanging on to the past with all of our strength. We worship the past as if it were a god. We look for a static existence where life was created in the wave of a magic wand and fail to see our connection to the wonderful and awesome diversity to not just life, but to the universe itself, constantly unfolding. We look around and presume that others of past generations saw and experienced life the way that we do; that our ancestors shared a vision of life through our eyes. We fail to understand that life itself is unfolding within us and around us as will continue to do for thousands of generations yet to come. The universe is constantly being transformed or it could not exist. Life or death; dynamic or static.

It is good to honor the past; the road that life and humanity has travelled. From the very beginning, the journey has been one of opening to new possibilities – and we see the journey of life that has always moved toward consciousness – to awareness of itself. In this vision, all of humanity; all of life; all of the trillions of stars and planets; the trillions of galaxies, is connected. The beauty of creation is found in the wonderful blooming of life, sprouting from a single seed, and filled with a spirit that cannot be quenched. The times, they are a-changin’ and it has always been so. We continue to learn more about creation and our place in it. The struggle to be open to life and change, is continually a struggle between life and death; hanging on to the past or being open to the future. The story of the Crucifixion and Resurrection is just such a story. Opening ourselves, letting go of what was; emptying ourselves for the sake of life, and then experiencing the Resurrection to new life. The Resurrection is not possible without dying first. Fear can hold us back; fear can create stumbling block along the way, creating wars, division, violence, greed and death. But in spite of our human fears, the Spirit of Life continues to pull us forward. At times in spite of ourselves, but always forward.

CHANGE IS THE ONLY CONSTANT: FROM THE WOMB TO THE TOMB – WE ARE IN THE MIDDLE OF SOMETHING MUCH BIGGER THAN OURSELVES – YET WE ARE INCLUDED AND CO-CREATORS OF SOMETHING BEYOND OUR VISION – TO BECOME HUMANITY FULFILLED IN THE IMAGE OF GOD.

THE TIMES – THEY ARE A-CHANGIN’ AND IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN SO AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE SO. The struggle to become is pain-filled and difficult. We are struggling to be born.
