“TO LIFE, TO LIFE, L’CHAIM” (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF)

May all your futures be pleasant ones

not like our present dreams

Drink, l’Chaim, to life

To Life, l’Chaim

L’Chaim, L’Chaim to life

It takes a wedding to make us say

Let’s live another day

 Drink, l’chain to life

We’ll raise a glass and sip a drop of schnapps

in honor of great good luck

That favored you

We know that

When good fortune favors two such men

It stands to reason we deserve it too

To us and our good fortune

Be happy, be healthy, long life

And if our good fortune never comes

Here’s to whatever comes

Drink l’chain, to life.”

To life: Jesus said to those listening, “I came to bring life, not death.” Proclaim the Good News of God’s love for creation – a love so great that God became one with the lover – a marriage of God and Man in the Word become flesh. Intimacy – two becoming one is a long journey together – a struggle at times with grief and anxiety, but also with joy and exaltation. It does not happen in a minute or a day or an hour. But it happens when the two are joined together, walking together, feeding one another and loving one another.

Marriage would be very strange, lifeless in fact, if the rules and regulations, the laws were the normal way of interaction. Let’s see my dear, it is now 2:00 p.m. on the third Friday, so it is the time for us to make love. Cold and without heart – without passion but according to the book. Real passion requires commitment – “For richer or poorer, In good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, until death do we part”  When we read the Talmud or the Old Testament, we see the stories of humanity; the unfaithful love, walking along with “I AM” -the unknowable as the faithful lover; sometimes angry, sometimes joyful, but alway faithful to her/his creation. This commitment requires us to forgive and to be forgiven, to listen carefully to the other and to give of self for the sake of the other. This is the story that the Gospel tells us; the story of the Word becoming flesh and giving of self for the sake of the beloved.

The real difficulty that many have is believing that they are really loved. At times, we have a difficult time, understanding the total absolute love that holds all of creation together and that we are part of that. We grow up believing that we have to earn love – that we have to pay the price. We see ourselves as unworthy and  are in fact unworthy – but that is what love really is about – it is not earned;  it is given and received and there is no price-tag. We walk together – like Tevye and is wife – when he asked her; “Do you love me?” and she gave a long answer, but in the end, she concluded that “I guess I do.”

Heaven bless you both nazdrovia

To your health and may we live together in peace

Za va shas da rovia

Heaven bless you both nazdrovia

To your health and ma we live together in peace

May we both be favored with the future of your choice

May you live to see a thousand reasons to rejoice

To life!”
