THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ROBERT FULGHUM

Robert Fulghum wrote his version of the Good News in 1990. He had a wonderful grasp of the Scriptures and understood well that all of the commandments are contained in two that are fundamental to all further laws. He understood that the commandments are all tied together by relationships; our relationship with ourselves, one another and with God. And he understood that ultimately these were the identical.

‘SHARE EVERYTHING

PLAY FAIR

DON’T HIT PEOPLE

CLEAN UP YOUR OWN MESS

DON’T TAKE THINGS THAT AREN’T YOURS

SAY YOU’RE SORRY WHEN YOU HURT SOMEBODY

WASH YOUR HAND BEFORE YOU EAT

FLUSH

WARM COOKIES AND COLD MILK ARE GOOD FOR YOU

LIVE A BALANCED LIFE – LEARN SOME AND THINK SOME AND DRAW AND PAINT AND SING AND DANCE AND PLAY AND WORK EVERY DAY SOME

TAKE A NAP EVERY AFTERNOON.

WHEN YOU GO OUT INTO THE WORLD, WATCH OUT FOR TRAFFIC, HOLD HANDS, AND STICK TOGETHER.

BE AWARE OF WONDER. REMEMBER THE LITTLE SEED IN THE STYROFOAM CUP; THE ROOTS GO DOWN AND THE PLANT GOES UP AND NOBODY REALLY KNOWS HOW OR WHY, BUT WE ARE ALL LIKE THAT.

GOLDFISH AND HAMSTERS AND WHITE MICE AN EVEN THE LITTLE SEED IN THE CUP – THEY ALL DIE. SO DO WE.

AND THEN REMEMBER THE DICK-AND-JANE BOOKS AND THE FIRST WORD YOU LEARNED – THE BIGGEST WORD OF ALL – LOOK.

Every thing you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.”

In all of these rules or axioms, we come to better understand that all of Creation is related – we are connected to the Cosmos itself; to all living things, including human beings. The Gospel calls us to move outside of ourselves and to recognize that we are part of something much larger than ourselves or the self created world around us. What we do or fail to do affects all others. We have all read that when a Butterfly flaps it’s wings in Mexico, it has an impact in New York. What we do: How we treat our world and each other impacts all of creation that we share. There are always consequences for our actions; sometimes negative, sometimes positive. We participate in bringing life or death into the world by our action or by our lack of action. We are called to LOOK – and to realize that Love is just that awareness that we are connected and responsible – for the COMMON GOOD.
